Says Industry Self-Regulation Works,
Beer Institute Refutes Conclusions
Of National Academy Of Sciences Report
Two recent reports from Washington applaud or condemn the beer
industry.
A Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) report says the industry has been effective in
abiding by its own high guidelines on advertising.
Conversely,
and as expected, a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Institute
of Medicine panel, dominated by anti-alcohol proponents associated
with the Robert Wood Foundation, takes the industry to task for
"too much advertising" and again recommends higher taxes
as a solution.

Ask For Cold Beer, Firefighters Get Cases
The Fire Chief of Kelowna, the principal city in a part of
Canada’s British Columbia ravaged by forest fires, joked
about needing some cold beer and the response from residents
was overwhelming according to the Vancouver Sun.
Chief Gerry Zimmermann said at a news conference that the
fire department had received many gifts and well-wishes, "but
it could use some cold beer." Within hours, the department
overflowed with cases of beer. One sight, however, "brought
tears to the eyes of many of the overworked, exhausted firefighters."
It was a little boy pulling a wagon full of potato chips,
a little girl with a box of cookies. They had a tub with flowers
around it and it was full of ice and beer. "She’s
see these guys sitting there, all hot and dusty, and her dad
had trained her well—she’d pick up a can of beer
and go over and offer it to them," Chief Zimmermann said.
"The public support is what is getting us through right
now."
